This week I’ve been thinking a lot about you. Specifically I’ve been thinking about all the feedback I got when I asked what are the three things which trouble you the most everyday. You won’t be surprised to hear the answers are:
1) Not Enough Time
2) Inner Static/Criticism/Self-Doubt
3) Work Pain
And what about the girls in our lives who look up to us to see how to become women? It turns out they they are struggling in similar ways.
In fact Simone Marean, co-founder and executive director of Girls Leadership, a national nonprofit serving girls in grades K-12 put it this way in a recent interview:
“Its true that girls are doing great on paper,” (getting graduate degrees at high numbers and enjoying more role models in every field than ever before)
“but when we look at what we call the ‘internal resume’ we don’t see the same success story. In fact though girls academic achievement has risen to the point that they now consistently outperform boys, their rates of stress, anxiety and depression have risen as well.”
So if you are feeling you are are doing everything possible to achieve all that you can but your not actually enjoying it as much as you would like, you are not alone.
Apparently this “wellness gap” As Marean describes it, is what we all need to focus on for our girls and for ourselves.
I don’t know about you but I’m looking around our country and our planet and I’m thinking we need more of women’s voicesalive and vibrant (not harried, overtaxed and exhausted).
So we can contribute to the discussions that matter.
One of my all time favorite quotes is from the Dalai Lama who said that Western women will save the world.
I don’t think he means it as further pressure.
The key is women being women AND using our power fully.
So often we trade out our messy, emotive, juicy core to get to the finish line.
We close down the heart and thicken our skin because it seems that is what is required of us.
We try really freaking hard at work and at home for a gold star that doesn’t seem to come. Or worse when it does it feels less than satisfying, like a sense of “isn’t there more to life than this?”
So if you are ready to put up your hand and say “basta” or “enough” to racing through your life.
to feeling depleted.
to feeling like you don’t get to the things which are most precious to you and you don’t know why.
And to feeling overwhelmed by the suffering at the border and in so many corners of our globe.
